The 2010 Will-Machado Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Nationals will be held on July 31st in Auckland. The following day a BJJ seminar will be held by Geoff Aitken, Geoff Grant and Shane Cox. All proceeds from the seminar will be given to the Haydn Clasby support fund.

Congratulations to John Erskine who on the 16th of July defeated Ashley Clinch for the Versus Unlimited middle weight MMA title. Congratulations also to Scott Benson who won the 4 man grappling tournament held at the same event in Invercargill. Nice work guys!

Scott Benson & Kieran Smith Win At UMAF 7 |

The Academy had a great night at UMAF 7 in Christchurch with both Scott Benson and Kieran Smith winning their MMA matches. Kieran made his MMA debut and has only recently turned 16 years old but showed skills and composure well beyond his years. Scott put on a fanatastic display of takedowns and control to win the main event against Johnnie Low from Chrichton Cobbers.

John Erskine Wins 4 Man Grappling Tournament at Fight Sports Night 2.5 |

Congratulations to John Erskine who over the weekend won the 4 man grappling tournament at Fight Sports Night 2.5, defeating Gareth Ealey in the final. This event was held at The Bedford in Christchurch and the grappling tournament featured some very tough competitors representing Judo, wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. |

Knives are the most common weapon used in an armed attack in New Zealand where gun ownership is responsibly controlled. In fact, crime statistics just released show a marked increase in the numbers of people carrying knives and using them. As a result of this deadly trend and in response to the numerous inquiries and concerns Dr Geoff Aitken, chief instructor at the Academy of Combat has put together a practical, efficient and robust knife and edged weapons defence workshop that the average person can learn and implement quickly. Brad Riddell & Cam Steer Win At Sports Fight Night 2 |

The fighters from the Academy had another great night over the weekend with Brad Riddell winning his Thai boxing bout and Cam Steer winning his MMA fight. Cam won by rear naked choke in the first round and Brad delivered an extremely impressive knock out. Phil Loney also had a very good Thai boxing match, impressing the crowd with some spectacular throws, but conceded a very close decision. The Academy had a great night at Cage Warriors 3 in Christchurch over the weekend, with Brad Riddell winning his Thai boxing fight and Scott Benson winning his MMA fight by submission.
